Mapping as a practice compels and expands visual art making. In this course, students will investigate the fundamentals of drawing as a conduit to a greater understanding of New York as a living map. As Jonathan Raban states, the city “invites you to remake it, to consolidate it into a shape you can live in…decide who you are, and the city will again assume a fixed form around you. Decide what it is, and your own identity will be revealed, like a map fixed by triangulation.” Through a series of observations, exercises, materials and projects, students in this class will create a body of work that responds to the possibility of the city as a living map that both informs their histories and identities and is imprinted by their engagement with it.
The goal of all assignments and exercises is to provide students with the chance to develop some familiarity with various types of art making within the context of their environment, as well as to expand the definitions of what those practices can be. Each day will consist of exercises in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom, in the city. Two group outings will be scheduled per week, including two to four artist studio visits. Generally the class time will be divided into demonstrations, in-class work time, critiques and discussions. Student progress will be assessed primarily through individual critiques as well as formal group critiques. Students will also have the opportunity to take field trips to visit points of interest throughout the city.
