Hong Chun Zhang recieved a B.F.A. degree in 1994 from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, and an M.F.A. degree in 2004 from the University of California-Davis. After graduating from UC-Davis, Zhang moved to Lawrence, Kan. Her work is in many public and private collections, and she has exhibited work internationally in venues as diverse as the Smithsonian national Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the third Chengdu Biennale in China. “Hay Wire,” a solo exhibition on view through March 8 at the Lawrence Arts Center in Kansas, was inspired by her life experiences in rural Kansas and in urban China. The exhibition includes paintings, drawings and installation work. Zhang's lecture visit is hosted in part by KCAI's Asian studies program. Read more.

“Construction in Structure” opening reception

"Construction in Structure" is part of the KCAI Career Services Access Alumni Events in which student work is juried and selected to be shown by alumni curators. The exhibition is curated by Matt Bollinger ('03 painting); Justin Gainan ('04 fiber); Erika Hanson ('06 fiber); Amelia Ishmael ('04 photo/new media and '09 art history); and Jason Lips ('02 ceramics).

"What Will Be" opening reception

"What Will Be" is the first show in the newly renovated space at Undergrads Underground, a new Kansas City Art Institute student gallery at The Leedy-Voulkos Art Center. The exhibition will feature work by KCAI seniors from the ceramics department Emily Connell, Hank Hafkemeyer, Will Preman, and Ben Harle. Each artist is connected through the medium of clay, however individual work varies and will include video, photography, and mixed-media installation. The exhibit will be on view through March 31. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

The film festival is presented in partnership by the Kansas City Art Institute and Heartland Japan Exchange and Teaching Alumni Association and will include short documentary films about the recent earthquake and tsunami disasters in Japan. Among the films shown will be Academy Award nominee “The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom.” Proceeds from the event will go towards relief efforts in Japan. Today is the last day to view "On Watch" at the H&R Block Artspace at KCAI.

The exhibition explores strategies of surveillance in contemporary art and culture in the works of five international artists and a pioneering open source project team.

The artists in “On Watch ”employ a range of methodologies and technologies, ranging from border patrol, mobile phones, street level surveillance, aerial reconnaissance photography, sousveillance, satellite imagery, GPS and global mapping and social media.
