The H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute presents:
THE BIG DRAW - Saturday, July 19, 2014
11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
The schedule of events:
11 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. Collabs: 7x7 drawings workshop - artist Tim Brown
In the spirit of collaboration and fun, Tim Brown, a member of the Okay Mountain collective of Austin, Texas, will conduct a workshop for parents and children, friends and strangers, to draw, paint and create a temporary mini-installation of art that can be taken home at the conclusion of the workshop. With the emphasis on making a series of quick drawings on 7” x “7 matt board, participants will learn how to set-up and finish drawings with another person in a Collab way.
1 – 2:45 p.m Open House: a 360-degree drawing workshop - artist Katy McRoberts
In this workshop participants will be invited inside a blank, white, inflatable space and given nearly free rein to adorn the surrounding surfaces with image and text. Themes of decoration, place-making and recorded storytelling will be considered as players explore their relationship to interior spaces in an immersive shared 360-degree drawing surface.
3 – 4:45 p.m. Jigsaw: the director’s cut workshop - artist Andrew Ordonez
In this mixed-media and collage-based workshop, participants create images on pre-formed, 2-D, modular wooden shapes designed to connect together and ultimately combine into a unified jigsaw puzzle. Envelopes with themed images are provided to all artists to use or trade with others when creating the work. This exercise explores simultaneity in Cubist and Modernist painting as well as human dependency.
12 - 4 p.m. POP-UP CHARLIE - artist Charlie Mylie
Yes, it’s true! Pop-up Charlie can draw anything for you, just ask! In his shiny gold outfit and conical hat (dunce or wizard? you decide!), Pop-up Charlie offers custom ink and watercolor drawings of whatever you’d like, on the spot!
