Graphic Design HIGD 130-01-SU NEW!
Are you obsessed with type, logos and images that make up our visual culture? In this workshop, you will learn how to create visual communication that is both expressive and meaningful. Incorporating both handmade and digital processes (utilizing Adobe Creative Suite), you will create a brand concept that is then applied to a range of printed and digital materials. A presentation and exhibition will conclude the course. Supplies are provided; bring a sketchbook and pens/pencils. This class is open to high school juniors and seniors.

Digital Art Intensive HIPA 120-01-SU
Here is the way of the future for illustration and design. Draw and design with color, pattern and strong composition-all on your computer! You will create with the aid of a drawing tablet, adjust your digital photos, collage your imagery, compose text and understand how to prep your digital art for Web or print. You will upload your art to the Internet as well as create your own files (saved to your flash drive) suited for printing at home or a printing service. An exhibition will conclude the course. Drawing Intensive for Your Portfolio XYPH 035-41-SU
Build the basics required for a strong college portfolio. We will focus on observational drawing with three days spent on the important self-portrait and still life in color that every college wants to see in a portfolio. We will finish the week with two intensive days of drawing from a model. These drawings will strengthen the portfolio of work that you produce at your high school. Get ready to impress the college review panels!

Painting Intensive HIPA 110-01-SU
For ambitious high school juniors and seniors with prior visual art experience, spend an intensive week immersed in pursuit of painting and realize your personal, contemporary vision as you build your portfolio. Full days of painting will be divided between color mixing and theory with perceptual projects. Previous beginning art courses and experience with painting is recommended. Examples from your new body of paintings will be exhibited at the conclusion. Supplies included.

This is the course for you if you are interested in building your portfolio for the college level. In this course, we will work on composition and observational drawing, building to larger scale drawings. Creating a Children’s Picture Book XDES 199-80-SU
Do you have an idea for a children’s book? Whether it’s an original manuscript or a new twist on an old story, we will focus on creating a submission-ready book dummy. We will discuss the appropriate age level and format for the book and illustrations. Bring your manuscript (or at least your well-thought out idea), a sketchbook and pencil to class.

Learn to draw buildings within a landscape setting. We’ll explore perspective relating to architecture and landscape, line qualities and other formal aspects of drawing. You may work in one color or use color media such as water media or colored pencil. The class will work on-site at KCAI or in the immediate surrounding area. Botanical Painting using Digital Photography XPAI 353-10-SU
Summer is here and it is the perfect time of year to photograph and paint from nature. We will focus on learning to take reference photographs of flowers and then use them to illustrate and paint watercolors. We will work in both a studio setting and plein air on location at the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden. Students will need to bring their own digital camera.

In this course we will explore color and basic painting techniques using a very reliable model: ourselves. We will start with the basics of drawing the face including placement, proportion and expressions. We will then move on to working with color mixing, color schemes, mood and harmony. This class is for artists who want to push beyond traditional art forms and explore new realms of possibilities in their paintings. Anyone who is interested in mixing painting, drawing, collage, photography, printmaking or computer images into their paintings is welcome. Basic principles of color and design will be reinforced throughout the course. Various mixed media techniques will be presented each week. Water media paints are recommended. Painting and Meaning XPAI 255-01-SU
The artistic struggles of the painter do not typically originate in material or technical problems but in unclear goals. This course focuses on the possibilities of painting as a means of personal and philosophical exploration. It also explores the relationship between iconography and the artist’s purpose; between painting as a disinterested object of beauty and painting as a tool of ethical inquiry. Bring an 8.5 x 11-inch lined pad, pen and examples of your work to the first class. Other supplies will be discussed at the first class.

Calligraphy was the visual art form prized above all others in traditional China. The genres of painting and calligraphy emerged simultaneously, sharing identical tools — brush and ink. Come experience this unique art of writing developed more than 3,000 years ago. This class will blend the poetic vocabulary of Chinese characters with choreographed hand movement and structured composition to achieve the purest form of calligraphy.

For eight weeks we will learn and apply photography principles and mechanics starting with the basics of exposure, various types of light including flash and different types of equipment, such as lenses.
