Painting
The painting major is based in a range of experiences where students are asked to draw on their own experiences while addressing the contemporary and historical references within the major.
Students move through a range of assignments designed to develop a personal response to their art-making using a range of media to express themselves. In many cases this encompasses installation, painting, exhibition and curating work as they develop a professional approach to their work, preparing for a life as an artist.
The curriculum calls for 15 to 18 credit hours per semester.
The sophomore year includes 6 studio hours of painting each semester, plus 3 hours of drawing and 6 hours of liberal arts. In the spring semester, there is a 3-hour studio elective.
In the junior year, there are 5 hours of junior painting, 6 hours of studio elective, 1 hour of professional practice and 6 hours of liberal arts.
The senior year entails 5 to 6 hours of senior painting, an hour of professional practice in the fall semester, 3 hours of studio elective, 3 to 6 hours of liberal arts and a 3-hour open elective in the spring semester.
