Pablo Helguera is a New York-based artist, educator and author. He explores history, pedagogy, sociolinguistics, ethnography, memory and the absurd in work that takes many forms. His work as an educator has usually intersected his interest as an artist, reflecting on issues of interpretation, dialogue and the role of contemporary culture. Portraits of Thought is a series of creative workshops exploring the space that exists between verbal and visual communication and comprehension featuring Charlotte Street Foundation award winner Marcus Cain ('98 painting) in association with the Kansas Art Therapy Association. This first workshop in the series will feature a family activity led by Jennifer Kempema, ATC-BC registered art therapist, based on the painting "Passing/through" by Cain. Since 1997, the Charlotte Street Foundation has recognized and provided support for visual artists in Kansas City and has helped fund projects for 77 artists through its fellowship program. Anne Austin Pearce (attended), Marcus Cain (’98 painting) and Luke Rocha (attended) were selected by the Charlotte Street Foundation as the 2012 Visual Artist Award Fellows. Each artist received a $10,000 unrestricted cash award, and their work will be shown at the H&R Block Artspace at KCAI in an exhibition this fall. Nandipha Mntambo graduated with an M.F.A. degree (with distinction) from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in June 2007. Mntambo was recently named the 2011 Standard Bank Young Artist for Visual Art, which will include her work being featured in a national touring exhibition ending at the University of Potchefstroom Art Gallery in South Africa Aug. 16–Sept. 14. In 2006 she was one of five young artists selected for the MTN New Contemporaries exhibition at Johannesburg Art Gallery in South Africa. For more information, visit www.kcai.edu/currentperspectives.

Showcasing contemporary student artwork from the departments of ceramics, digital filmmaking, fiber, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Exhibition and sale hours are 5-7 p.m. Nov. 30, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dec. 1 and noon to 5 p.m. Dec. 2.
