Spectra: A Nomadic Platform for Experimental Film and Video launches its January program with a group exhibition entitled "Sculpties," curated by David Rhoads, at the H&R Block Artspace at KCAI, 16 E. 43rd St.
The exhibition features works by Robert Chase Heishman (’08 photography and art history) and Megan Schvaneveldt, Jordan Johnson (’10 sculpture), Bonnie Lane and Brendan Meara (’04 painting.)
"Sculpties" focuses on video works that lie closer to the realm of sculpture than their film counterpart. The participating artists approach the work through a variety of methods and conceptual backgrounds, but the resulting outcomes are both singular and intensely physical.
Spectra is a Kansas City initiative that brings contemporary moving image artworks to local screens. The collaborative effort is organized by Kansas City-based artists Jeff Eaton (’07 photography and art history), Yann Aguirre (’08 interdisciplinary arts), Tim Amundson ('09 digital filmmaking), Robert Howsare (’09 printmaking) and Crystal Ann Brown. This monthly platform presents a selection of avant garde and experimental works by regional, national and international artists. Each Spectra program is hosted by a different venue, reflecting the desire to develop a dedicated yet inclusive community audience. Spectra seeks to connect artists and audiences to communities and ideas outside their normal purview. In addition, Spectra aims to invite guest programmers, both local and national, to further this goal and foster a sense of connectedness.
