KCAI enrollment reaches all-time high

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Aug. 23, 2010) — The Kansas City Art Institute, one of America’s most renowned four-year colleges of art and design, is welcoming the class of 2014 to its campus this week. The 247 freshmen and 52 upper-class transfer students will join 447 returning students, boosting total enrollment to 746.
 
“In recent years, enrollment has ranged from about 650 to about 670, so we are extremely happy at the growth in enrollment for the 2010-11 academic year,” said Kathleen Collins, president of KCAI.

Curator to address students at convocation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Aug. 16, 2010) — Robert Cohon, curator of art of the ancient world at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, will speak at the school’s annual convocation, which will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 25 at the Community Christian Church, 4601 Main St., Kansas City, Mo. 

 
Cohon has been curator of art of the ancient world at The Nelson-Atkins and has taught at the University of Missouri-Kansas City through a joint-appointment since 1985.

“2010 Kansas City Flatfile” opens June 19 at the H&R Block Artspace at KCAI

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 9, 2010) — The “2010 Kansas City Flatfile,” featuring two-dimensional artwork by Kansas City-based artists in media including drawing, photography, prints and mixed-media works on paper as well as time-based artwork in the “Videofile,” will be on view from June 19 to Sept. 25 at the H&R Block Artspace at the Kansas City Art Institute, 16 E. 43rd St. The exhibition opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 18.

Kansas City Art Institute to host fourth annual Art of the Car Concours™ on June 27

(June 3, 2010) - The fourth annual Art of the Car Concours™, featuring a vast array of vintage, classic and special-interest vehicles, including cars, trucks, racing cars and vintage motorcycles, belonging to Midwest area collectors, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 27 on the campus of the Kansas City Art Institute, 45th and Oak streets.

Kansas City Art Institute adds four trustees, elects new board chair

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (June 2, 2010 ) — L. William Zahner, CEO of A. Zahner Company, Architectural Metals, has been elected chairman of the board of trustees of the Kansas City Art Institute. His term of office begins July 1. A member of the board of trustees since July 2004, he succeeds Gary Gradinger, chairman and CEO of Golden Star Inc., who had served as board chair since 2007.

Film by Kansas City Art Institute animators wins Student Academy Award

Kansas City, Mo. (May 14, 2010) -- “Dried Up,” an animated film by Jeremy Casper (’09 animation), Isaiah Powers (’09 animation) and Stuart Bury (’10 animation), has won a Student Academy Award in the 37th annual Student Academy Awards competition hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. The filmmakers will travel to California for the award ceremony June 12, at which time they will learn whether their film is receiving a gold, silver or bronze award.

Rauschenberg, Wilson to receive honorary doctorates at KCAI commencement

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (May 4, 2010) — During commencement ceremonies May 15, the Kansas City Art Institute will confer honorary doctorate of fine arts degrees on Robert Rauschenberg (posthumously), who studied fashion design at KCAI in 1947-48 and went on to become one of the nation’s most celebrated artists, and Marc Wilson, who retires in June as director of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

KCAI appoints director for special programs for main and Northland campus

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 26, 2010) — The Kansas City Art Institute this week announced the hire of Tabitha Schmidt as director of special programs for KCAI’s main and Northland campuses.  The main campus is located at 4415 Warwick Blvd., and the Northland Campus for Special Programs is at 1801 N.W. Platte Rd., #275, in Riverside, Mo. Both locations offer programs for children, youth and adults as well as special opportunities for art educators and for high-school students thinking about majoring in art and design in college.

Emerging artists to show and sell work at end-of-semester exhibition and sale

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 14, 2010) –– The Kansas City Art Institute’s end-of-semester exhibition and sale, showcasing contemporary student artwork in a wide range of media, will take place May 7-9. The exhibition and sale will feature two- and three-dimensional work by students in the departments of ceramics, digital filmmaking, fiber, graphic design, interdisciplinary arts, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. Pieces will be displayed in the various studio buildings on campus. Work can be purchased beginning at 5 p.m.

Noted artist to address 2010 KCAI graduates, commencement audience

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 14, 2010) — Kerry James Marshall, known for large-scale paintings, sculptures and other objects that take African-American life and history as their subject matter, has been named the Kansas City Art Institute’s 2010 commencement speaker. Commencement ceremonies will be held at 2 p.m. May 15 at the Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th St.
