Studio Descriptions
How Does One Begin?
Life is experience, story, narrative and allegory, metaphor and dreams. Life is a constant flow of information. How does one translate all of this into art? How does one begin? What language can encompass this realm? Well, visual artists start with drawing, a playful spirit and lots of drawing, so will we. We will draw like maniacs, quickly and playfully with simple media, then you will build an individual language from those drawings from which you will create a painting.
Instructor: Brett Chenoweth
Fantastic Fibers
Come get some fiber in your diet! Don't worry - we won't make you eat whole grains, but we will have a ball learning how to turn plain white fabric - silks, cotton and rayon - into a palette of color, pattern and texture using a variety of hand-dying techniques. Using different types of dyes in combination with ancient Japanese tie-dye techniques (not your average hippie tie-dye!), block printing and more, you will learn how to embellish the surface of fabric and mark it with your own style. Time permitting, you will be able to add three-dimensional elements to your fabric to give it some texture or make functional/non-functional art from it. Guys and gals both are encouraged to enroll - fabric doesn't discriminate!
Instructor: Mary Beth Yates
Text Unleashed
Guided by Victoria, "the Mad Chatter," we will use the poetic conceit of persona (or mask) to grunt out as much raw text material as possible. Then we will unleash plans for mutating it all into usable art. Inspiration, creation, destruction, dispersion. Don't sign up unless you mean it.
Instructor: Victoria Payne
Warped Wardrobe
You will have the opportunity to create an original design to take with you using found materials and embellishments. Additionally, a brief overview of apparel and costume design, fashion art and history, fashion buying, manufacturing and production will give you a well-rounded idea of the fashion industry today.
