High School Summer Intensives

Painting

For juniors & seniors
For ambitious high school juniors and seniors with prior visual art experience, spend an intensive week immersed in pursuit of painting and realize your personal, contemporary vision as you build your portfolio. Full days of painting will be divided between color mixing and theory with perceptual projects, and other projects that springboard from investigating what is currently happening in the painting world, plus forecasting possible future directions. Previous beginning art courses and experience with painting is recommended. Examples from your new body of paintings will be exhibited at the conclusion of this intensive. Supplies included.

This is the course for you if you are interested in building your portfolio for the college level. In this course, we will work on composition and observational drawing, building to larger scale drawings. We will also discuss the college admission and application process as well as the techniques for capturing and sharing portfolio images. We will discuss art programs nationwide and methods of applying. Most supplies provided. Students will purchase a drawing clipboard at the second class.

Fiber: Multi-media Surface Design

Explore methods of printing and dyeing a wide variety of fabrics. Your class will be a mixture of talks, demonstrations of contemporary dye processes and time to experiment on your own. Painting: Drawing to Abstraction XDDR 315-80-SU
All painting starts with drawing. You will gather source material, and do a series of 20 small drawings, collages and even some writing. Using these as starting points, you will begin to develop a series of paintings, refining and translating your ideas into a painting language. Painting and drawing experience is suggested. Printmaking: Intaglio (etching)

For beginning students, this course will be an introduction to intaglio printmaking (etching). The instructor will help guide individual projects, demonstrate sequential printmaking steps and facilitate technical questions. Handouts will be given on procedures and techniques. Would you like to build your own Web site but don’t know the difference between html, xhtml and Hotmail? Learn the different tools available on the market to design a Web site to show and/or sell your work. You’ll discover a Web host that suits your needs and build a site with your own domain name. We’ll cover how to create the site, upload images and maintain the site. To the first class bring a traveldrive with at least 64 MB of memory, and preload several images of your work.

Ceramics: Before the Wheel, Handbuilt Vessels

Before the invention of the wheel there were beautiful pots. We will draw from Japanese, African and American influences as we create our vessels. Concentrate on figurative sculptures with an emphasis on narratives and story telling rendered in clay. You will begin with a simple portrait of yourself or a friend and move to a sculpture of your choice. You will learn to see in three dimensions and learn basic clay building/modeling techniques. Drawing: Beginning

This course emphasizes the process of drawing as an intuitive response to the study of form. You will learn composition, proportion and tone through the study of visual relationships. Working primarily from the model, you will gain an understanding of the technical and aesthetic aspects of drawing by exploring a variety of wet and dry media including pencil, charcoal, ink and black and white paint. Materials will be discussed at the first class. Bring an 18-x-24-inch newsprint pad, drawing board, charcoal and kneaded eraser to the first class.

Drawing: Drawing the Human Face

The emphasis of this course is learning to break down the face into simple shapes, applying proportion rules, shading/highlights and working with flesh tones. We will also address composition for good portraiture. You will work from black and white to full color. It is recommended that you have some drawing experience before you take this course. Fiber: Surface Design

Few things are as intimate as cloth. We are enveloped by it virtually every moment of our lives. In class we will explore our relationship with the surface of fabric and cloth by way of additive and discharge techniques using color, pattern, texture (visual and tactile) and ideas. Painting: Color and Expressionism

Continue developing your oil painting skills from direct observation. You will be working from still lifes and/or models. You will be learning about and studying the paintings of the German expressionists and the French fauves, allowing their work to inspire your exploration and use of color, line and composition. Painting: Portrait Painting Demonstration Workshop NEW

Learn the finer points of portrait painting during this demonstration workshop. Sandra Templeton Potter one of only four portrait artists nationwide accepted in the Cecilia Beaux Forum mentoring program studying with Everett Raymond Kinstler considered to be one of the nation’s foremost portrait painters. She will demonstrate both oil and pastel techniques. At the last class, you can bring your portraits for review and critique.

Painting: Watercolor

Watercolor is one of the world’s favorite mediums. In this class, beginning and intermediate students explore the basics of watercolor painting. You will focus your work around the still life and architectural subject matter. Techniques such as the use of washes, color design and the addition of texture (through push and pull, direct addition of cloth and splatter) will enhance your knowledge of the uses of this medium. Photography: Beginning Black & White

Explore your own personal creativity, become proficient in using your camera, learn to develop black and white film and learn to make black and white prints with dynamic compositions. This class in traditional black and white photography will include demonstrations, slide lectures and printing in the darkroom. You will need to have your own 35mm SLR camera with 50mm lens, built-in light meter and manual override (i.e., not a totally automatic camera). This course is designed for the photographer who is seeking a comprehensive introduction to digital imaging. Learn basic digital capture as well as basic Photoshop skills for printing and manipulating your photographs. We will also discuss the history and future of digital photography. You will need to have access to a digital camera and have basic knowledge of computers. Before the first class, please read your camera manual and understand basic camera operations. Printmaking: Monotype

Sculpture: Sculptural Welding

Come and learn how to weld steel with basic methods, using MIG and gas technologies. You will create a metal sculpture using skills taught. No experience is necessary. The instructor will supply a materials list on the first day of class, but bring a notebook and pen or pencil.

Sculpture: Iron Pour! NEW

We’re working at 2500 degrees! You will create your own sand/resin mold, help prepare the iron and coke for the furnace and assist with the pour. It’s physical work, but an amazing process. A rare opportunity to experience molten iron.

Woodworking: Beginning

This course introduces you to common woodworking machines and tools with an emphasis on safety. You will learn wood preparation and basic joinery to complete your own skirted table.
