Beginning Black and White Photography

Beginning Oil Painting

Bookmaking/Bookbinding

Make your own beautiful hand-bound books. You will learn Japanese stab binding which is elegant and simple. We'll also explore other binding techniques. Then, collage, decorative papers and printed images will be used to embellish and shape the spirit of your books. All supplies included.

Character Creation

Take your cartooning or manga a step further. Create imaginary characters with careful construction, planning and purpose. We will design every detail of our characters, how the look what they are thinking, how their world works, etc. Through drawing, writing and sculpture we'll have a great time using our imaginations. Flash Animation

Love to draw and design and want to see your imagery MOVE? Since Flash files use vector graphics, they are lightweight and easy to work with on your own computer, and they're easy to upload to the Internet. Bring your passion to learn to make technologically savvy art and interest in drawing, color, and/or cartoons. Regular attendance is important, to get the knack of Flash - you must be persistent! Experience with scanning, digital photography, Adobe Photoshop, or Adobe Illustrator is useful but not necessary. Click here for a small supply list.

Intermediate Drawing

Continue to build your drawing skills. Learn more about shading, perspective, composition and value. You will be working with still-life and creating facial drawings. We'll finish with a self-portrait. All supplies provided.

Plein Air Drawing

We will venture outside to capture the beauty of the spring season in landscape drawings around the KCAI campus and Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The student will learn about atmospheric and linear perspective and how color functions within spatial depth. This class will focus on accuracy when depicting foliage especially and later on with buildings. "Plein Air Drawing" is a color-intensive class, where students will learn about color theory and will apply what they've learned through the medium of pastels and watercolors on their outside drawings. All materials provided.

Printmaking Fandango

Prepare to get messy! We'll explore traditional and nontraditional printmaking methods including relief printing, Xerox transfers. . . even printing with Jell-O! In this class we will be creating colorful backgrounds with both paint and collage that we will then print over.
