Lunch provided
Fiber Studio, KCAI
Pauline Verbeek-Cowart, Associate Professor Fiber
Wool is one of the oldest and most versatile natural fibers. This workshop is intended to give participants a thorough understanding of the properties of wool and its ability to felt. We will start the day with a comprehensive lecture on wool and examine the felting capabilities through demos and a multitude of samples. We will devote most of the day to hands-on experimentation with natural dyes, felting and nuno felting. Nuno felting allows us to create a lightweight fabric by felting wool fibers into an existing fabric.
Pour it On! Teapot Intensive
Saturday, April 26
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Lunch provided
Richard J. Stern Ceramics Building, KCAI
Christa Assad, Special Instructor
This workshop will include demonstrations on and off the potter’s wheel, as well as collaborative exercises aimed at stimulating our imaginations! The teapot is a fantastic form that inspires invention, improvisation and play. With many technical challenges - the lid fit, spout, handle - and endless opportunity for content, gesture, and decoration, the teapot is one of the most collectible and admired vessels in ceramic history.
We will explore throwing, coiling and slab-building techniques as options for teapot construction, and will warm-up our minds and hands with a wonderful exercise in sharing ideas and enthusiasm (great for your students!). We will also experiment with the mishima technique (traditional Japanese colored slip inlay) of decoration and discuss glaze application processes.
Finally, we will have an afternoon tea break featuring teapots from Christa’s personal collection! Bring your own hand-made cup or treats to share and we will take this opportunity to create our own tea ceremony and experience the value and beauty of artist-made pottery. All levels are welcome.
**A $25 deposit will be required to register for these workshops. When you attend, your deposit will be refunded.
