Flu Policy
Information about flu prevention and symptoms has been provided to members of the campus community, and the college’s emergency management planning team has activated our pandemic influenza response plan.
As of Oct. 28, two students have been reported ill with the H1N1 virus. They have been advised to stay at home until they are fever-free.
Notices have been posted around campus to educate the campus community about flu symptoms and how to protect themselves. Daily actions can make a big difference. These are the guidelines we are promulgating:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Don’t expose others when you are sick, and avoid contact with others until you are well. Signs and symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue.
- Avoid spreading germs by not touching your eyes, nose or mouth; covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze (and then throw that tissue away); washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, and using alcohol-based hand cleaners.
- Get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food.
These are the preventive steps we are taking currently:
- Installing anti-bacterial wipe dispensers in all computer labs.
- Installing hand-sanitizing stations in various locations around campus.
- Distributing personal hand sanitizer pumps to staff in highly-public areas.
- Putting up good hygiene reminder posters around campus.
- We have identified a location on campus that can be used to isolate symptomatic residential students if necessary.
- Ordering surgical masks, disposable gloves and thermometers should they be needed in the isolation of students.
- Notifying faculty and students about any necessary modifications to the attendance policy.
- Asking students to notify the Student Life Office at 816-802-3423 if they develop flu-like symptoms. Students will be referred for immediate medical attention.
- We have been in touch with the Jackson County Health Department and will continue to be in touch with them as needed.
For KCAI faculty, staff and students:
Sick persons should stay home or if at school or work asked to go home.
Faculty, staff and students should be alert to any signs of fever and any other signs of influenza-like illness before reporting to school or work each day, and notify their teacher or supervisor and stay home if they are ill.
Employees who are ill should not travel while they are ill.
Students who are ill should call the Student Life Office at 816-802-3423.
Families of students living in the Living Center who live within a five-hour drive of Kansas City may be asked to pick up their son or daughter from the campus.
Students and employees with influenza-like illness should remain at home until at least 24 hours after they are free of fever (100° F [37.8° C] or greater), or signs of a fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications.
Employees who are well but who have an ill family member at home with influenza can go to work as usual. However, these employees should monitor their health every day, and notify their supervisor and stay home if they become ill.
